Quick Tips to Fix a Dirt Devil Vacuum

Dirt Devils are versatile conventional vacuums with powerful attachments. When your Dirt Devil malfunctions, you may be at a loss for how to fix it. If you are still covered by the warranty, you’re in luck, and the repair may come for free. If you need to repair your Dirt Devil vacuum on your own, however, some tips can get you started.

Check the Container and Filter

Although it’s rather obvious that the vacuum cleaner will have trouble cleaning if the dirt container is full, you might not notice clogs covered by an empty dirt container. Depress the latch to remove the container from the vacuum and, turning the lid counterclockwise, pull the filter upward and out of the container. Empty the dirt container and clean the filter. While the vacuum is disassembled, check for any signs of a clog where the container latches into the vacuum cleaner. Reassemble the unit, and ensure that it latches properly into place to allow for the correct airflow.

Remove Debris and Replace Parts

If the vacuum still does not seem to be sucking up dirt, there are a couple of other things that should be checked. The first is the hose. Twist and pull it from the inlet and unwrap it from the machine, checking its length for obstructions. Should the hose appear to be clear, move on to the nozzle guard if your Dirt Devil is an upright. It is attached by five screws, which can be removed using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Look for obstructions beneath the guard, taking out the brush roll if necessary for a closer look. A worn brush roll will need to be replaced. Check the belt as well, and if it appears worn, remove the nozzle guard, slide the belt off and replace it with a belt of the same type.

Check the Electricity

When your vacuum won’t turn on at all or if it turns off during use, the problem may be a number of things, most of which are easy fixes. Often, a vacuum won’t run because the circuit breaker has been tripped or the cord is not plugged in tightly enough. After these options are ruled out, consider that the thermal protector may have engaged to prevent the unit from overheating — allow it to cool for a few minutes and try again. Unfortunately, loose electrical wires causing such problems will need to be referred to a dealer for further help.
